The Home
Artist(s): Mohammad Abbasi
Date: December 4 to January 31
Exhibition Space: Main Exhibition
Mohammad Abbasi’s paintings are windows to somewhere else. The distant horizon, sky and ground tell us that this is somewhere rather than someone, something or nowhere. Within this otherworldly, imagined third space, Mohammad inserts boats and simple shelters. Tenuous and fragile, they strive for stability.
“I relocated from Tehran to Edmonton in June 2021. The journey I embarked on involved substantial changes in both geography and culture, leading to numerous challenges post-immigration,” Mohammad says. “Adapting to new environments, customs, and societal norms required resilience and perseverance. Overcoming language barriers and forging connections in a foreign land added complexity to the experience,” he adds.
The Home showcases the experience of immigration, particularly the slow and challenging work of rebuilding one’s foundations in a new land. Mohammad’s work shares a place where we can witness fear and hope, a deep longing for safety and a renewed sense of belonging.
