Myrna Catherine Fyfe was born Aug. 20, 1941 in Simpson, Saskatchewan. Fyfe would meet her husband Jock while teaching in Fort Smith, N.W.T. and then moved with him to St. Albert in 1966. She saw that the town was evolving into a suburban community and immediately became involved in many areas, firstly as a teacher and educator and then in community programs. Her areas of concern included health and social matters (e.g. emergency mother replacement service and daycare), arts and crafts, seniors and native affairs, and a variety of community adult and youth affairs. This involvement would lead to an invite to run for St. Albert Council. She won a byelection in 1973 with a majority of the vote to become the first woman to become a councillor (alderman) in St. Albert’s history.
