I’ll Never Marry a Farmer

Lois Elsa Veregin was born in 1929 in the small town of Buchanan, Saskatchewan. In 1948, her family moved to the Strathcona neighbourhood in Edmonton. Two years later, Lois met the love of her life, University of Alberta agricultural student Edward (Ted) Hole. As a child, Lois vowed to “never marry a farmer”; however, the two married in 1952. The newlyweds bought a mixed farm in St. Albert. The farm stretched from the Sturgeon River shore to Erin Ridge.

Speaking later in life, Lois recalled, “… the day we stood together for the first time on that gently sloping hillside, gazing down toward the Sturgeon River, we knew we found the right place.”
