ONLINE EXHIBITION

Women of The Garden (3)

The labours of women are found both physically and metaphorically in Elsa’s exhibition. Louise Bennet-Coverley (Miss Lou), Ms. Coverley’s daughter-in-law, is a modern hero of Jamaican culture and language. A poet, writer, storyteller and beloved educator, she uplifted Jamaican Patois, celebrating its traditions and impact on the people of the island, and ensuring its place as a national language. Further back in history, Nanny of the Maroons was a leader in the early 18th century, who established one of the three Maroon communities where people who escaped slavery could live freely. A brilliant military strategist and community builder, even centuries after her life she continues to inspire.
