Chalifoux served within several organizations to fight for women’s and Indigenous rights. She co-founded the Native Friendship Centre in the 1970s in Slave Lake, assisting women struggling with alcoholism and domestic abuse. After her time in the Senate, she founded the Michif Cultural Institute (now known as Michif Cultural Connections) in St. Albert, which serves as a place to “preserve, promote, protect and celebrate Alberta’s rich Métis culture”.

Chalifoux also became a trusted Elder for many individuals and organizations.
