Virtual Tour with Curator: kanawêyimêw (She takes care of them)
Join Emily Baker, Curator at the Art Gallery of St. Albert for a virtual tour of our spring feature exhibition, kanawêyimêw (She takes care of them) by Michelle Sound.
Cree and Métis artist Michelle Sound’s work reflects on her family history. A member of the Wapsewsipi/ Swan River First Nation in Northern Alberta, Sound was born and raised on the unceded and ancestral home territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tseil-Waututh peoples.
Tour participants will take a close look at two bodies of work – Chapan Snares Rabbits, a series of 30 rabbit fur drums hung in our bright staircase space, and Nimama hates fish but worked in the cannery, a digital projection installed in our vault.
Steeped in family stories of strength and care in the face of enfranchisement, displacement and the loss of language, Sound’s work honours the sacrifices of past generations in an exhibition that pays a tender tribute to maternal love.
